About Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of natural medicine from India. Here's what it is, in plain English — and how it can work alongside your physician's care.
The Three Doshas
Ayurveda describes three fundamental energies — doshas — that combine uniquely in every person. Think of them less like a horoscope and more like a body-mind "operating tendency" that treatment plans are tailored around.
Vata
Air & Space
Governs movement — think circulation, breathing, and nerve impulses. In balance: creative and energetic. Out of balance: anxious, restless, or prone to dry skin and joint discomfort.
Pitta
Fire & Water
Governs transformation — digestion, metabolism, and mental focus. In balance: sharp and driven. Out of balance: irritable, inflamed, or prone to acidity and skin sensitivity.
Kapha
Earth & Water
Governs structure — think tissue, immunity, and stability. In balance: calm and resilient. Out of balance: sluggish, prone to weight gain or congestion.
What Is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma ("five actions") is a structured, multi-day detoxification and rejuvenation program. Under physician guidance, it combines preparatory oil therapies with targeted cleansing procedures. The five classical procedures are:
- Vamana—Therapeutic vomiting, traditionally used to help clear the upper respiratory and stomach areas
- Virechana—Purgation therapy, traditionally used to support the liver, gallbladder, and small intestine
- Basti—Medicated enemas, traditionally used to support the colon and balance vata dosha
- Nasya—Administering herbal oils through the nose to support head and sinus wellness
- Raktamokshana—Bloodletting, rarely used today and only at practitioner discretion
In practice, most clients experience Panchakarma through the preparatory and supportive therapies (like Abhyanga, Shirodhara, and Basti-adjacent care) rather than every classical procedure — your physician determines what's appropriate.
Is Ayurveda Right for Me?
Ayurveda is complementary wellness care — it works alongside, not instead of, your physician's medical care. It's a good fit if you're looking for a whole-person approach to stress, chronic discomfort, or general wellness, and you're open to combining hands-on therapy with dietary and lifestyle guidance.
FAQ — New to Ayurveda
Is it safe?
Yes, when performed by trained practitioners with a proper health history review. We'll flag anything that needs your physician's clearance first.
Do I undress?
For oil-based treatments, you'll wear disposable undergarments and be draped throughout — you're never fully exposed. You can request a therapist of a specific gender when booking.
Is it religious?
No. Ayurveda is a system of natural medicine, not a religious practice — no religious participation is required or expected.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your goals — some come for a single relaxing session, others follow a structured multi-day Panchakarma program. Your consultation will clarify what's right for you.
Does insurance cover it?
Typically no. Most clients pay out of pocket; check with your HSA/FSA administrator, as many plans allow these funds for wellness care.
